Knights host finished

Me ha llevado una semana más de lo que tenía planeado, pero al fin he terminado los caballeros, que compondrán en núcleo de los dos bandos enfrentados. En total son siete unidades. Tenía pensado pintar ocho, pero he tenido un problemita con el envío de las miniaturas, y hoy por hoy son siete. Si tengo tiempo, más adelante pintaré la última unidad. Si no, pensaré cómo compensar la balanza en la partida.

It took me a week more than I expected, but finally I finished the knights, that will be the basis of both confronted sides. They are a total of seven units. I planned to paint eight, but I had a little problem with the sending of the figures, and right now they are seven. If I got time, I will paint the last unit. If not, I will think how to balance the points in the game.

He pintado todas las miniaturas en serie para que mantuvieran el mismo estilo, y también para ahorrar tiempo. Hay que tener en cuenta que son 42 miniaturas de caballería, pero en realidad han sido más fáciles de pintar de lo que parece. De hecho, me ha resultado tan sencillo que tal vez en el futuro pinte otro ejército de caballería. El principal problema que me han planteado es el preparado de las figuras antes del pintado. Todas las miniaturas son de RedBox, y aunque son muy buenas en relación detalle del esculpido y pose, lo cierto es que todas tenían unas líneas de molde bastante acusadas, y algunas muchas rebabas, que con el plástico blando de que están hechas, son muy difíciles de quitar.

I have painted all the figures at once to maintain the painting style, and also to save time. You have to bear in mind that they are 42 cavalry miniatures, but they were easier to paint that it looks like. In fact, it was so easy that perhaps in the future I will paint another chivalry army. The main problem was the preparing of the figures before painting them. All figures are from RedBox, and although they are quite good in sculpting and pose, they have mould lines and some of them a lot of flash. With the soft plastic they are made of, removing the flash was very difficult.

Para limpiar las figuras, utilizo una cuchilla afilada, alfileres y una vela. Primero quito las rebabas y las líneas de molde más acusadas con la cuchilla. Debe ser muy afilada, y más vale ir cortando el plástico, ya que si lo raspas vas a causar un desastre. Después de haber pasado la cuchilla quedarán hilillos y trocitos de plástico: entonces, con tranquilidad, caliento un alfiler con la llama de la vela y voy repasando la punta caliente por las lineas de molde y los trozos de plástico. Así se va quemando el plástico y puedes ir eliminando las partes que afeen la figura. Claro, hay que tener cuidado porque si no puedes acabar fundiendo partes importantes de la figura. Sin embargo, es fácil cogerle el tranquillo: piensa que estás extendiendo mantequilla caliente sobre pan.

To clean the figures, I use a sharp blade, nails and a candle. I clear all the flash and mould lines with the cutter. You better cut the plastic than scrape it off, because you can cause a mess. Later, I heat the nail and brush up the plastic that reminds, and also the mould lines, in order to burn it and smooth it down. Take it easy; if not, you can burn out the figure and eliminate details you want to retain. It is easy after a while: imagine you are spreading hot butter in a loaf of bread.

Los estandartes y los escudos son de papel. Imprimí a color y luego pegué los escudos sobre cartulina negra. Después, pinto los bordes con los colores heráldicos del escudo, y los pego directamente a la miniatura.

Banners and shields are made of paper. I print them in color and later I glue the shields in a black cardboard. Later, I paint the edges with the heraldic colors of the shield, and directly glued it to the figure.

Las peanas han sido las que más tiempo me han llevado, aunque no debería haber sido así. Quise utilizar las nuevas pinturas texturizadas que vende Games Workshop, ya que vi algunos tutoriales en los que explicaban como usarla, y pensé que aplicarla me quitaría trabajo, ya que sólo habría que dar una capa y luego un pincel seco. Pero el resultado no me gustó, y tuve que utilizar más tiempo en darles un lavado y luego aplicarles pincel seco. Con eso tampoco quedé satisfecho, y finalmente preparé las penas con flock de Model Scenic de dos colores, que luego repasé con cola blanca diluida y pinté con toques de pintura. El resultado, aunque me llevó mucho más de lo planeado, me ha gustado mucho, y de hecho lo repetiré en las otras unidades de este proyecto.

The bases took me a lot of time, and it shouldn't be. I would like to use the new texturized paints from Games Workshop, because I saw some tutorials about how to use them, and I though it will be quick and easy. But after painting the bases, I didn't like it at all, so I washed them and painted again, and I wasn't satisfied neither. At the end, I decided to prepare the bases with flock form Model Scenic, that I soaked with glue and also painted with some color. The result take me a lot, but I like it so much that I will use the same basing for the resto of the units.

La parte más importante del pintado ha sido elegir bien las miniaturas. He utilizado las cajas de RedBox Mounted Men at Arms, Scottish Heavy Cavalry y European Mounted Men at Arms, ya que tienen todos los mismos caballos con armadura, y en su mayoría representan caballeros con artes blanca. Por lo tanto, podía pintar a la mayoría con acero, y con eso tendría más de la mitad de la miniatura pintada.

The most important part of the painting was choosing well the figures. I used the RedBox Mounted Men at Arms, Scottish Heavy Cavalry and European Mounted Men at Arms. They all have horses with metal barding, and most of the knights wear white harness. So, I could paint more than a half of the figure with a mere metal dry brush.

The basis of the painting was a dry brush of metal colors.

It is important the way you dry brush. I used a flat brush, and give strokes from top to bottom.

At the end, I painted the gold parts and inked them with Citadel Reikland Fleshshade.

Para pintar el metal, he seguido el pincel seco en todos los pasos, menos en los retoques finales. El proceso ha sido el siguiente:

• Pincel seco cargado (yo le digo "pincel húmedo") de Metalizado Bólter. En todo el proceso de pincel seco, he utilizado un pincel plano. Es importante el sentido del pintado: yo he aplicado toques de arriba a abajo, dejando siempre el pincel en horizontal, para que la pintura quede en la parte superior de la miniatura.

• Al secarse el Metalizado Bólter, un pincel seco de Acero Engrasado de Vallejo, aplicado también con pinceladas de arriba a abajo.

• Después de estas dos capas, apliqué una tinta negra con un pincel grueso sobre todo el metal.

• Tras la tinta, de nuevo una capa de Acero Engrasado, y luego otra de Plata de Vallejo.

• Por último, pinté con un pincel de detalle en color Plata las partes de las armaduras que quería destacar: los yelmos, la parte más amplia de petos y espaldares, y también el filo de las espadas.

• Para acabar, pinté los dorados con Oro de Vallejo y luego le apliqué una tinta de Citadel Reikland Flesh shade.
